- What is mokoki preview?
- mokoki preview is the genesis of a new way of viewing and interacting with the world. At home, on–line, or with mokoki mobile giving you the world in your pocket, you will always be able to explore and share the world.
mokoki preview allows you, the mokoki community, to help us create what mokoki will become. Your input and Feedback is crucial to ensuring mokoki becomes the perfect way to share the world. How do you want to record your special places? What matters to you when soaring over the world looking for interesting places? Tell us and we can make it happen.
- Why should I provide Feedback to mokoki?
- mokoki is currently only a preview, a taste of things to come. We have great ideas, but so do you. The more input we get from you, the greater mokoki can become. Help create something fantastic. If you like the idea of what you could do with mokoki, a place that allows you to share and explore your world, wherever you may be, then give us your Feedback and be one of the special few that have a hand in shaping mokoki.
Getting mokoki on my mobile
- How do I register and get mokoki on my phone?
- Simple. Just follow the steps in the right column and you’re on your way.
NOTE: you require a JAVA & Internet enabled phone to obtain & use mokokiMobile.
- How do I find out if mokoki is compatible with my phone?
- Head over to the supported devices page and see if your phone is on the list. If it's not, you can use the form at the bottom of that page to request your phone brand and model. We are continuously working on expanding mokoki's already extensive compatibility.
- I click on the link in the download SMS but nothing happens?
- First check is your phone internet enabled? Does your carrier allow you to visit normal internet sites (try www.yahoo.com for example in your browser)? If the answer to these is yes, try writing down the Download Link and type it directly into your Mobile Phones internet browser. If it still doesn’t work, head to Feedback and tell us what’s wrong. We’ll try and fix it and let you know once we have.
- I downloaded mokoki but I can’t find it in my phone?
- Nearly all phones save downloaded applications in either your “Applications”, “Games” or “My Own” folders. Have a look in each of these folders to see if that’s where it saved to.
- I’ve downloaded mokoki, I try to open it but nothing happens?
- Is your phone JAVA enabled? If yes, then head to Feedback, tell us your phone model, mobile phone number and carrier you’re with, and as soon as we make it work on your phone we will let you know so that you can get mokokiMobile.
- I open mokokiMobile and then my phone asks me do I want to allow this internet session. Why?
- You can’t store the entire world’s maps on your phone. It’s just too much data. So for mokoki to work it needs to download the maps over the Mobile Phone Internet. When your phone asks you whether you want to connect to the net, select “Yes. Only ask once” or the similar option your phone provides.
Setting up mokokiMobile
When you first download and install mokoki you may need to set your phone up to work properly. For mokokiMobile to work at its best requires access to the mobile internet (via GPRS).
- What do I do when asked “allow mokoki to send and receive data” by my phone?
- When you open mokokiMobile, you may be asked whether you want to “allow mokoki to use network and send or receive data?” or something similar. If prompted, select “Yes. Ask once.” or whatever similar option you are provided.
- Which Access Point do I use?
- When opening mokokiMobile you may get prompted (for eg if you own a Nokia phone) to choose your “Access Point” – select “Internet”.
- How do I access the internet on my phone?
- If you’re not asked which Access Point to use, and mokoki doesn’t download any maps when it opens, you will need to set your phone up to access the mobile internet (for eg. some Motorola phones). All Carriers provide instructions for how to this on the phones they provide on their website.
For example, if you’re carrier is Optus, they have a great portal that will tell you how to set–up your phone to access the Internet. Go to http://optusau.wdsglobal.com/internet and follow the instructions. All carrier’s websites should provide you instructions on how to set your phone to access the internet (via GPRS). If not, they’re a bad carrier. If that fails try your handset manufacturers website.
Using mokoki
mokoki is available in two formats; mokokiWeb, the website-based version, and mokokiMobile, the phone-based version. Both formats work in exactly the same way, remember your Bookmarks and share your account details. Use mokokiMobile when you are out and about, then use mokokiWeb when you are browsing the 'net on a computer. To use either of the formats, you must first register an account. You will then be sent an SMS to download mokokiMobile to your phone, and you will be able to login to this website (using the login bar at the top of each page) to take advantage of mokokiWeb.
- How do I find a location?
- Open the application and select ‘MENU’. Then select ‘FIND’. You will then be given the option of ‘NEW FIND’ as well as a list of your most recent searches.
Select ‘NEW FIND’. Enter your ‘STATE’, ‘SUBURB’, ‘STREET’ & ‘STREET NO’. To get a result you only need to enter a minimum of the first three characters for each of ‘STATE’ & ‘SUBURB’. But the more information you put in the more accurate your search result will be.
To clear a mistake press the Right Top Soft Key (the key on the right directly under the screen on your mobile).
Select ‘FIND’ and you will then be presented with a list of search results that match your criteria. Select the one that matches where you’re looking for and you’re away.
- How do I find the nearest restaurant, hotel or other place of interest?
- There are two ways.
1) When you are doing a ‘NEW FIND’ you have the option of selecting a category at the same time. When you are taken to your location all the nearest restaurants (or whatever Point of Interest you are searching for) will be displayed.
2) Alternatively, find your location first, then go ‘MENU’, ‘INTERESTS’ and select from the categories or enter your business name or business type you are after into ‘SEARCH’. The nearest results will be displayed on the map.
If there are no results on your screen, there may be blue arrows on the edges. Follow the arrows to the nearest results. Alternatively hit your ‘Fire’ button (usually the centre button of your directional controls on your mobile) and you will be automatically centred over your nearest point (a good trick if you can’t see any results).
- How do I zoom?
- If using mokokiMobile, press your phone's left soft-key to activate the ‘ZOOM’ menu. From there you can press 'up' on your phone's directional pad to zoom in closer, or press 'down' to zoom out. There are several zoom levels to choose from. Once you have made a selection, press your phone's middle soft-key (often in the centre of the directional pad) to confirm your zoom level selection and hide the zoom menu. Alternatively you can wait for the zoom level to automatically confirm, the zoom menu will remain active while the maps load, then you can press 'up' or 'down' to select a more appropriate zoom level if necessary.
If using mokokiWeb, drag the zoom control slider located on the left side of the map.
- How do bookmark a location?
- Once you have found a location, centre your crosshairs on your screen over the location, than select ‘MENU’, ‘ADD BOOKMARK’. Then give your bookmark a name and select ‘ADD BOOKMARK’. Your bookmark is now saved in your bookmarks lists for viewing later.
- How do I get directions?
- In the ‘MENU’ select ‘DIRECTIONS’ and then ‘FROM’. You can then have the option of selecting a ‘POINT ON MAP’ (place a dot on the map as your starting point), ‘FIND’ (enter a street address exactly like using ‘FIND’) or select starting location from one of your ‘BOOKMARKS’.
Follow the exact same process to get an ending location or ‘TO’.
NOTE: if getting directions over a long distance you may need to wait a few seconds before a route is returned.
